Welcome to Our Vision...
to a world where all have access to sanitation and potable water, where all children are able to learn in well-built classrooms, where there is sustainable transportation, where families no longer suffer from disease, starvation and poverty, where renewable energy has replaced fossil fuels, and engineers are leaders of the sustainability revolution. At the University of South Florida, we have personal and professional goals to nurture and educate young people to value and implement this vision of a better world. The USF Graduate Concentration in Engineering for International Development in Civil and Environmental Engineering has a strong focus on sustainability and humanitarian engineering. Students are allowed to explore and innovate at the interface of engineering design and technology with people, society, and health by working closely with faculty and students in public health, anthropology, geography, policy, geology, biology, and planning. Many of us are faculty, but most are energized students who have combined their graduate and/or undergraduate education with service, education, research, and importantly, the creation of knowledge that benefits the most vulnerable members of humanity in meeting their basic needs for sustainable water, sanitation, hygiene, shelter, food, mobility, waste disposal, energy, income, education, and equality.
Dr. James Mihelcic has directed educational and research programs since 1997 as a Peace Corps Master’s International partner. The Peace Corps officially retired the program in fall of 2016. However, the University of South Florida has continued their graduate degree programs in civil and environmental engineering with an extensive Concentration in Engineering for International Development. We are also offering a Coverdell Peace Corps Fellows Program in Civil or Environmental Engineering for Returned Peace Corps Volunteers. This graduate concentration requires: 1) coursework in global health, applied anthropology (medical, environmental, and development), and a Water, Sanitation, Hygiene (WaSH) engineering, 2) a development-focused research component, and 3) a long-term overseas field experience in sustainable development as a WaSH engineer. The international field experience allows a student to remain enrolled as a full-time student (with zero tuition/fees) and gain development experience serving with Peace Corps and Nongovernmental Development Organizations (similar as the Master’s International Program).
Our program differs from other International Development Engineering Programs. (1) knowledge creation is critical to our work, we require completion of a 6-credit research thesis; (2) to prepare you for interdisciplinary research and service, we require 9 credits of coursework in a) coursework in global health, applied anthropology (medical, environmental, and development), and a Water, Sanitation, Hygiene (WaSH) engineering, b) a development-focused research component, and c) a long-term overseas field experience in sustainable development as a WaSH engineer.; (3) students can obtain a Graduate Certificate in Water, Health, Sustainability; (4) USF's commitment to our vision is supported by their creation of a School of Global Sustainability, and, (5) we have many faculty with international and sustainable development experience that works its way into the classroom and research.
Our graduates are in high demand by traditional U.S. employment sectors that include engineering consulting firms and municipalities. Many also work with the federal government (includes USAID, USEPA, GSA, Indian Health Services, FEMA, Park Services, Fish and Wildlife) and nongovernmental development organizations (e.g., USAID, Oxfam GB, Unicef, CARE, Catholic Relief Services, Action Against Hunger, Norwegian Refugee Council, Cardno Emerging Markets, International Relief and Development).
One goal of USF's Strategic Plan is to "expand local and global engagement initiatives to strengthen and sustain healthy communities and to improve the quality of life." This is also a goal of our Master's International Peace Corps Program. Come experience and help us implement this vision of a better world.
