Getting Acquainted
Information about Tampa and USF has been compiled from the previous MI students. Please use these resources to make plans about coming to USF and living in Tampa.
Arriving On Campus
Prior to arriving at USF, you should register for a USF e-mail address, which will include choosing a NetID.
Upon arriving at USF in August, you will need to sign a form for in-state tuition. If you are a non-Florida resident, you will need to sign this form in order to be charged in-state tuition, rather than out-of-state tuition rates.
In the Marshall Student Center, you will need to get your USF ID card for $10. It is best to do this early as it gives you access to the bus lines and many discounts at restaurants and shops around campus.
If you have received an offer from Dr. Mihelcic or any other professor, you will need to sign an offer letter. With a copy of this offer letter, you can go to the Payroll Offices. Bring two forms of government-issued identification (driver's license, passport, or social security card) and a voided check in order to set up a direct deposit account with the university payroll.
Register for Fall Classes
To register for Fall semester classes, you will need to log in to OASIS with your NetID. Under the Student link, you can find the Registration website, including the Class Schedule Search, where you can find the CRN. With the CRN, you can enter the Register, Add, or Drop Classes website. Once you arrive on campus, you can go to the Anthropology and Global Public Health departments to get waivers signed so you can register for the Anthropology and Global Health classes.
Housing
One option for finding available housing is using the website established by USF Student Government:
Rent Solutions
The USF Tampa campus is located in the northeast part of the greater Tampa Bay area. USF's campus is in a sprawling urban environment and located close to highways 275 and 75. St. Petersburg and Hyde Park areas are the more trendy neighborhoods in the Tampa area with a more vibrant night-life and social scene. These areas are also more expensive and would require a 30 minute - 1 hour commute to campus.
Housing options used by previous Master’s International students:
The Pointe at South Florida - probably the cheapest, fully furnished option available within walking distance to campus. It has a nice pool and common area including a small gym and computer centerand there is free wi-fi throughout the complex. Each person signs an individual lease per bedroom, instead of per apartment, and leases are available for 6-month, 9-month or 12-months. (website)
Urban Place - (website)
40 Fifty Lofts - This is also a fully furnished apartment complex within walking distance of campus. The bus stops right at the entrance of the complex and can take you to campus. This apartment complex has a computer center and nice pool area with grills. The apartment also comes with a TV in the common area and one on the wall in each bedroom (website).
Willow Brooke - This is a nice unfurnished option that also allows pets to live in the complex. (website)
