Rachel was born in Ohio and grew up in Kentucky and Virginia. She graduated in 2019 with her Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering from Virginia Tech – go Hokies! Her interest in Civil Engineering and Humanitarian Engineering began after working on emergency home repair projects with Hurricane Sandy victims in New Jersey with an organization called TEAMeffort Missions. After working with TEAMeffort for two consecutive summers, she helped to design and coordinate numerous wheelchair ramps, decks, roofing projects, and summer camps for inner-city kids, while managing volunteer groups. Through these experiences, Rachel knew that she wanted to work at the intersection of civil and environmental engineering, community development, sustainability, and social justice advocacy.
Rachel came to USF because of the Engineering for International Development program and the unique interdisciplinary coursework it offered. She was also attracted by the extended field experience and will be leaving in June 2020 to serve with the Peace Corps in Panama as a WASH facilitator. In her free time, Rachel loves spending quality time with friends and family, being outside, baking bread, and drinking far too much coffee.
