Why the University of South Florida?
USF's International Development Engineering program is one of largest engineering development programs in the country. USF is one of 40 public research universities nationwide that is designated as both very high research activity and as community engaged by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. The U.S. News & World Report annual college rankings has placed the University of South Florida as the one of the nation’s "Up and Coming Universities" and is on the list of ‘Best Colleges’ as ranked by the Princeton Review. USF is one of the largest public institutions in the country and is one of 3 research-designated universities in Florida. USF’s $458 million research totals ranks is in the top 25 public research universities in the U.S. according to the National Science Foundation. The Chronicle of Higher Education ranked USF as the fifth fastest growing research university in the U.S. from 2000-2010.
Other items related to our work: 1) USF’s Center for Urban Transportation Research (CUTR) has a research portfolio in transportation planning of approximately $10 million; 2) USF is a major player with the Florida Energy Systems Consortium in terms of research expenditures related to solar, biomass and other renewable energy technologies; 3) USF received a major gift to create the Dr. Kiran C. Patel Center for Global Solutions. Launched in 2005, the Patel Center's goal is to identify challenges in developing nations and create viable solutions for improving the lives of their people. The new building that will house the Patel Center will be LEED certified; 4) USF recently created an Office of Sustainability and College of Global Sustainability. USF is one of only 22 institutions on the 2014 Green Rating Honor Roll list by Princeton Review, a designation given to institutions of higher education that demonstrate a strong commitment to sustainability in their academic offerings, campus infrastructure, activities, and career preparation and we receive a high ranking by the Sierra Club in the annual Green Schools ranking.

One the university’s strategic goals is even “expanding local and global engagement initiatives to strengthen and sustain healthy communities and to improve the quality of life.”
